Information
for parents/caregivers These
are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions: Who
can join?
Girls
and young women of all nationalities at any age from five years. Girls living
in isolated areas can take part through a programme provided by monthly letter
or email. Why
just girls? Research
indicates that girls and young women achieve more in a girl only environment allowing
them to develop in a co-operative rather than competitive environment. What
do the girls do? A
wide range of activities relevant to age, that balances physical, mental and social
development. There is a focus on leadership by girls encouraging responsibility
for self.
How
much time will it involve? Up
to two hours a week during school terms. There will be opportunities to join in
weekend and holiday activities, which could include camps, indoor holidays and
outdoor adventure days. Is
there a cost? There
are annual, national and local membership fees to cover programme equipment and
badges. A girl joining will need some GirlGuiding Gear and resource material. Financial
assistance can be available where necessary. Who
takes the activities? Groups
are led by a team of voluntary adult leaders, who receive ongoing training. They
ensure girls receive individual attention and adequate adult support, which guides
rather than directs them. What
is GirlGuiding New Zealand? A not for profit organisation offering a fun environment
for girls to develop confidence, self-esteem and an awareness of the outdoors.
